“Figaro’s Wedding” by Melanie Browne

The Empty Bottle

I watched his wife
standing there
in the front row
as he read
from his latest

She didn’t look happy
and reminded me of a politician’s wife
standing behind her husband
as he admitted infidelity
to his constituents

Like a seditious god
designing his own blowup doll
the author crafted
a freckled angular woman
that aroused
his protagonist’s curiosity
he read about how they slept together
but didn’t touch

I looked for cracks
in his wife’s composure

And I wondered how she felt
about loosing her husband
for hours at a time
to a woman
that didn’t
even
exist
